International Book Club at Bookshop BivarAn informal gathering for book lovers. You’re welcome to talk about your favourite poems, novels and plays from all corners of the world. Each session has different theme and you can come to all of them or only one.

Bivar Book Club

BivarBookClubBIVAR BOOK CLUB brings together booklovers once a month to talk about a book they’ve all read in advance.

We started this new book club in April 2017 and already had three discussions:  A Room with a View, The Magic Toyshop and Lucky Jim. There will be no discussion in July-August, but in September we start anew with Jane Austen’s Emma.

Writing Course with Michael Langan

Writing course with Michael Langan at Bookshop BivarHave you dreamed of writing compelling stories? Have you imagined working on your first novel? Or simply making your blog posts more engaging?

The Writing Course will help you get started with creative writing in a fun and judgment-free environment, under the expert guidance of Michael Langan, a charismatic teacher from London.

We had our first course from 21 March to 18 April and and the second one from 2 May to 30 May.

After many years of writing school textbooks and stories for children and teens, Gaile Parkin decided to ‘put on her big-girl pants’ and have a go at writing novels.
Her debut, Baking Cakes in Kigali – a comic novel about surviving the Rwandan genocide – is now translated in 16 languages, and negotiations are under way to turn it into a TV series.

Gaile will read from Baking Cakes in Kigali and from her second novel, When Hoopoes go to Heaven, and will talk about her work in Africa and the challenge of writing about difficult, tragic issues with a humorous touch.

SOILI Horttana is Finnish by birth, but has lived on the Iberian Peninsula since she was 19 years old. From the very first moment she arrived in Lisbon, it felt like home to her. In this exhibition we will see her oil paintings inspired by Lisbon.

Soili has a degree in Art History from Lisbon University. Her first solo exhibition was at Galleria Brilho e Cantelha in Paço de Arcos in 2008.
